My European adventures

While I’m still feeling refreshed from my recent travels, I think I ought to share some of the “firsts” I experienced during my trip. Each of these firsts, however small, seems especially meaningful to me, since I tend to avoid change like the plague! Whether I like it or not, 2010 is a year filled with change for me… and more so than not, I like it.

My firsts, in no particular order:

  1. solo transatlantic flight (and only my second transatlantic trip ever)
  2. visit to a country where I don’t speak the language (twice covered, with Slovakia and Hungary)
  3. time eating many things, but especially bryndzové halušky and ostrich
  4. holiday with Ewan, who ended up being (as expected) a wonderful travel partner
  5. European train trip, with coaches and compartments just like in Harry Potter!
  6. view of the Alps (in Salzburg)
  7. view of the Danube River (in Bratislava and again in Budapest)
  8. opportunity to speak a foreign language in the country where it’s natively spoken (German, in Austria; it’s a good thing I learned how to say “check, please,” or Ewan and I would still be sitting in a cafe in Salzburg)
  9. trip covering three countries (Slovakia, Hungary, Austria… I don’t really count the stopovers at London Heathrow as a fourth country)
  10. time taking more than 50 photos in a single day (at least, as best as I can recall)
  11. funicular railway ride (and my second, as well)
  12. time spending
  13. visit to a former communist country (Slovakia)
  14. swizzle!
  15. time being in four countries in a 24-hour period (US, UK, Austria, Slovakia)
  16. taste of Hungarian and Slovak wines, both of which are quite tasty!
  17. chance to speak a little Slovak
  18. time ordering food off a menu without being exactly sure what I was getting, and taking the risk anyway!

busy living life

sometimes, i get so busy living my life, that i forget to blog about it.

i really owe you all updates on my summer vacation, my new job, and the fact that paul just got a new job as well. it’s a crazy time!

but really, here’s the most important things:

  • i bought myself a bright green yoga mat yesterday (one more item off the birthday wish list), and
  • i think i’ve decided on a tattoo. (if i can live with the concept for six months or so, maybe i’ll actually go through with it.)

fun, sun, sand and waves

it’s been a very relaxing start to our week in stone harbor. we arrived on saturday morning around 11 and met up with most of the family at the cape may county park zoo. after a quick bite to eat — i had the yummiest italian sub — we got into the house.

all i can say is wow. mom and dad did a great job in selecting the house this year. it’s further south than we’ve ever stayed before (214 122nd street), but this end of the island is very quiet and it’s only about one block to the beach. the fact that we avoid crossing a busy street is a big benefit in my mind.

i’ve been out riding my bike … many of you may know that i’ve only learned to ride in the past two years, and as a result i’m still very nervous and inexperienced! yesterday was spent doing lots of figure-8s to practice my turning, which continues to be a source of anxiety while i’m riding. thankfully here at the shore, everything is very flat and so i don’t worry too much about hills! unfortunately, i did manage to get a bit of sunburn on day 1 since i didn’t put sunscreen on my arms before going out. bad chris!

we’ve also made it to springer’s two nights in a row for the best ice cream anywhere. my first night i had hoped for tim’s mint madness, which is mint ice cream with andes candies chopped up in it. yum! sadly, they were out. i made do with almond amaretto, which is so incredibly good that i didn’t mind too much. last night i had coconut, and i’m hoping tim’s mint madness will be back tonight. we typically have ice cream five or six nights of our week here; this year is on schedule to continue that tradition.

i’ve also managed to read hundreds of pages of the roosevelt women. it’s a fascinating story about the other side of the roosevelt family, profiling how the women impacted the men and may have made even bigger contributions to society at large, had the rules and morals of their time not interfered. the author has definitely done her homework, and yet i shy away from giving a wholehearted endorsement of the book because i find her style cumbersome and difficult to follow. the roosevelts didn’t help her quest by insisting upon using about six names for all their children, resulting in scores of eleanors, ethels, ediths, and corinnes … not to mention jameses, elliotts, and theodores.

next on tap is ellen degeneres’ the funny thing is and jon stewart’s naked pictures of famous people. can’t wait to do some more beachy reading!
