It’s worth a nickel

Yeah, it’s official. I’m a lazy blogger. I don’t even get the job done when someone else is providing the content!

Five days’ worth of words. For you. All for you.

Gewinnen means to win, and it is not separable.

Die Mannschaft hat das Fussballspiel gewonnen. The team won the soccer game.

Einladen means to invite, and it is a separable verb.

Georg ladet seine Verwandten zu einem Sportsfest ein. George invites his relatives to a sports meeting.

Der Lieblingssport is the favorite sport. It’s a compound word.

Der Lieblingssport von Fritz ist Radfahren. Fritz’s favorite sport is bicycling.

Gehören is a verb meaning to belong.

Diese Fahrrad gehört dem kleinen Schlingel. This bicycle belongs to the little rascal.

Sich verirren is a reflexible verb; it means to lose one’s way.

Der Tourist hat sich verirrt. The tourist has lost his way.

That’s the four days edition, since I’m so far behind.

Beissen means to bite.

Der Hund hat den Briefträger gebissen. The dog bit the mailman.

Ganz is whole or entire.

Der ganze Kürbis ist faul. The whole pumpkin is rotten.

Ich hoffe meine Studenten lernen den ganzen Tag Deutsch. I hope my students are learning German all day long.

Anziehen is a separable verb meaning to put on (a piece of clothing).

Er zieht den Mantel an. He puts  on his coat.

Der Körper is the body.

Der Körper des Menschen ist kompliziert. The human body is complicated.

“Regnerisches Wochenende” simply means a rainy weekend, and around here, when it rains, it pours. Nonetheless, here are four days’ worth of German words, for your reading pleasure.

Fragen is a verb meaning to ask a question. (Die Frage, or the question, is the related noun.)

Er fragt ihn,  wie alt er ist. He asks him how old he is.

Der Zahnarzt is the dentist.

Sie will nicht zum Zahnarzt gehen. She does not want to go to the dentist.

Das Herz means the heart.

Das Blut zirkuliert durch das Herz. The blood circulates through the heart.

Die Schmerzen is the pain or the ache, and leads to compound words such as die Zahnschmerzen (the toothache) and die Kopfschmerzen (the headache).

Ich habe seit ein paar Tagen starke Zahnschmerzen. I have had bad toothache for a few days.

Okay, the words from the last three days don’t seem to me to have anything in common (apart from being in German, and new to me).

Zwischen means between.

Ich sitze zwischen meinem Freund und seiner Frau. I am sitting  between my friend and his wife.

Suchen is to seek, to search for, to look for.

Der Brieftraeger sucht die Adresse. The mailman/letter carrier is looking for the address.

And finally, wiederholen, which means to repeat.

Bitte wiederholen Sie den Satz. Please repeat the sentence.

My last post was the slow edition, and then my teacher picked langsam as the word of the day! How funny/ironic is that? Anyway, the last 3 days’ worth just for your reading enjoyment:

Langsam, meaning slow, slowly.

Bitte sprechen Sie langsam. Please speak slowly.

Langsam aber sicher. Slowly but surely.

Überqueren is to cross.

Sei vorsichtig, wenn du die Strasse überquerst. Be careful, when you cross the road.

Einladen is a separable verb meaning to invite.

Wir laden unseren Bruder zum Mittagessen ein. We invite our brother for lunch.

Wir haben ihn eingeladen. We have invited him.
